ReliabiliTTy® Technology Licences from SafeTTy Systems Ltd
We offer a range of cost-effective ReliabiliTTy® Technology Licences (RTLs).
RTLs allow use of the technology and ‘Time-Triggered Reference Designs’ (TTRDs) described in the ‘ERES2‘ book (including all technology patented by SafeTTy Systems Ltd) in sectors ranging from aerospace, automotive, medical and industrial systems through to household goods.
Further information about RTLs is provided on this page.
The majority of our customers purchase their RTL as part of a cost-effective SafeTTy Solutions™ package.[This page was lasted updated: 2017-06-09]
We offer ReliabiliTTy licences in three categories: RTL0; RTL2 and RTL4.
The categories are related to a maximum ‘Safety Integrity Level’ (SIL) – or equivalent – of the projects in which the licences may be applied.
A summary of the links between licence categories and SILs is given in the table below.
- RTLx licensees can work with microcontrollers from any manufacturer.
- RTLx licensees can work with compilers and other software tools from any manufacturer.
- All licence categories (RTL0, RTL2 and RTL4) allow use of the recommended TT Platforms described in the ‘ERES2‘ book (CorrelaTTor®, DecomposiTTor®, DuplicaTTor®). This means (for example) that an RTL0 licensee could use a CorrelaTTor or DuplicaTTor platform (in a design that was not safety related), if such a platform was felt to be an appropriate solution for the product in question.
- RTL0 licences are typically purchased in order to allow use of the techniques and code presented in the ‘PTTES‘ book and / or ERES2 books in commercial projects that do not have safety implications.
The above notes are intended to summarise some of the key terms of RTLx icences: please also consider the information provided below and contact us if you have any questions about these licence arrangements.
RTLs allow use of the following patented technology (under the terms of the specific licence):
- Pont, M.J. (2016) “A monitoring unit as well as method for predicting abnormal operation of time-triggered computer systems”, SafeTTy Systems Ltd, GB2526082.
- Pont, M.J. (2016) “A framework as well as method for developing time-triggered computer systems with multiple system modes”, SafeTTy Systems Ltd, GB2526083.
Related international patents have been applied for.
We offer Evaluation Licences, Product Licences, Site Licences and Custom Licences.
ReliabiliTTy Technology Evaluation Licences (RTELs) allow organisations to explore the potential benefits of a full Reliability Technology Licence by carrying out detailed prototyping or evaluation activities. However, RTELs do not allow organisations to sell or give away products based on any technology or code examples described in the ERES book series.
12-month RTELs are provided as part of our Taster Day packages.
ReliabiliTTy Product Licences allow the design, manufacture and sale of a single identified product that incorporates ReliabiliTTy technology.
ReliabiliTTy Site Licences allow the design, manufacture and sale of multiple products that incorporate ReliabiliTTy technology in a single location.
ReliabiliTTy Custom Licences support more complicated requirements, including design and manufacture across multiple locations.
Please contact us for further information.
Public TTRDs and ReliabiliTTy TTRDs
We have made available a suite public TTRDs linked to the ERES2 book. These public TTRDs are designed to illustrate the use of some core TT techniques and platforms. These TTRDs are intended for use by individuals, hobbyists and university students (up to MSc level): use of these TTRDs in any form of commercial project requires purchase of an appropriate ReliabiliTTy licence.
In addition to these public code examples, we provide a further set of TTRDs to ReliabiliTTy licensees. These ReliabiliTTy TTRDs illustrate the implementation of the following TT platforms: CorrelaTTor®, DuplicaTTor®, and DecomposiTTor®. WarranTTor® designs are also supported. As you would expect, full source code is provided. At present, these ReliabiliTTy TTRDs target STM32F4 MCUs and TMS570 MCUs. Code for other targets can also be provided: please contact us for details.
Fees for RTLs start at £5,000 + VAT for a single product (RTL0), and £25,000 + VAT for a site licence (RTL0).
RTLs are usually permanent and always royalty free.
Most of our customers purchase their RTL as part of a cost-effective SafeTTy Solutions™ package.

Distributing product designs based on RTLs
Rights obtained through the purchase of RTLx Site Licences are not transferrable.
To explain what this means, suppose that your organisation owns an RTL4 Site Licence. Further suppose that your organisaton develops a system / product on behalf of a different organisation (we’ll call it “Organisation X”), and that this system / product incorporates technology that has been provided to you under the terms of the Site Licence.
If Organisation X has the right to sell the system / product that you developed in their own name, then Organisation X will require an appropriate RTL (for example, an RTL4 Product Licence).
One option in these circumstances is that your organisation could purchase an RTL4 Product Licence on behalf of Organisation X.
Please contact us if you have any questions about these arrangements.
Use of ReliabliliTTy technology in defence systems
By default, we do not provide RTLs for use in defence systems.
The use of any products and technology in defence systems may involve discussions with the relevant authorities about export control regulations.
If you wish to obtain an RTL for use in defence systems, please contact us to discuss this matter before placing your order.
University / college licences
We are happy to for universities and colleges to use our TTRDs (without charge) in courses for which a degree up to and including “MSc” level (or equivalent) is awarded. No licence is required.
Use of the techniques and code examples described in the ERES books in university research projects (including PhD-level programmes and equivalent) or in commercial training courses delivered by a university or college (for example, professional “short courses” for which no degree is awarded) always requires a licence.
Please contact us for details.
